When to book your school ball makeup

Book your school ball makeup artist about 6-8 weeks ahead — and earlier again if your ball lands in the busy August-to-November stretch or you’re booking as a group of friends. Popular Saturday dates and group slots are the first to go, so the earlier you lock me in, the more likely you are to keep your exact date and start time.

Why early matters more for school balls

Ball season in Perth clusters tightly. Most senior schools hold their balls within the same few months, which means a handful of Saturday nights carry almost all the demand — and one mobile artist can only be in one place per evening. Once a Saturday is booked, it’s gone.

A few weeks of lead time also gives us room to get the look right without rushing: time to swap ideas by message, sort out skin prep, and plan a running order if there’s a group of you. If you’re unsure of the date, you can still get in touch — I’d rather pencil you in early and confirm details later than turn you away because the night filled up.

The season clusters — book around the rush

Here’s roughly how Perth ball season runs and when to book to be safe:

Ball timingWhen to book byWhy
August-September (early peak)8+ weeks aheadFirst wave fills fastest
October-November (main peak)6-8 weeks aheadMost balls land here
Off-peak (autumn/winter)4-6 weeks aheadMore dates open

If your ball falls on the same weekend as several other schools, treat the early end of those ranges as your deadline rather than a suggestion.

Booking as a group

Getting ready together is half the fun, and it’s genuinely more efficient too. As a mobile makeup artist I come to you, so one of you hosts and I work through the group in a planned order while everyone gets dressed and takes photos.

A few things that make group bookings run smoothly:

  • One person co-ordinates. It’s much easier with a single point of contact for the date, address and numbers.
  • Tell me your photo-ready time, not the ball start. I work back from when you need to be in front of a camera.
  • Allow about 45 minutes per face. For a group of four, I’ll usually arrive around 3-3.5 hours before you need to be ready.
  • Book the whole group at once. Adding a friend later only works if the date is still free.

Formal and school-ball makeup is from $150 per person, and a small travel fee may apply depending on where you are.

A note for students across Perth

I travel right across the metro area and beyond, from the western suburbs through to Perth’s CBD hotels where some groups like to get ready before heading out. Wherever you are, the booking advice is the same: the further out you reach me, the better your chances of keeping the date, time and look you want.

If you’ve got a date in mind — even a rough one — send it through with how many of you there’ll be. I’ll let you know straight away whether it’s free and help you plan from there. You can read more about how I approach formal and school-ball makeup before you do.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should I book school ball makeup?
Aim for 6-8 weeks ahead, and earlier still if your ball falls in the August-November peak or you're booking as a group. Popular Saturday dates often go first.
How much is school ball makeup in Perth?
Formal and school-ball makeup is from $150 per person. As a mobile artist I come to you, so a small travel fee may apply depending on your suburb.
Can you do a group of friends getting ready together?
Yes — group getting-ready is one of my favourite parts of ball season. Tell me how many of you there are and what time you need to be photo-ready, and I'll build a running order so everyone's finished in time.
Do I need a trial before my school ball?
A trial isn't essential for a ball, but it's worth it if you have a specific look in mind or sensitive skin. Most students skip it and we plan the look by message instead.
What time will you arrive on the day?
I work backwards from when you need to be ready for photos, allowing about 45 minutes per face plus a buffer. For a group of four that usually means arriving 3-3.5 hours before.

    Setting spray vs setting powder

Setting powder absorbs oil and locks the base in place; setting spray melts layers together for a longer-wearing, natural finish. Use both for an all-day look.
