Start with skin, not makeup

The best thing you can do for mature skin happens before any makeup goes on. I spend real time smoothing and hydrating first — a well-prepped face means foundation glides on, sits evenly, and doesn’t sink into lines an hour later. If your skin is on the drier side, a good skin-prep routine in the days beforehand pays off more than any single product on the day.

Lightweight coverage that looks like skin

The instinct as skin matures is often to reach for more coverage. It’s usually the opposite that flatters. A thin layer of a hydrating, skin-like foundation, built up only where you want it, looks far fresher than a heavy matte base that clings to texture. Lift and open the eyes

Eyes are where mature makeup is made or lost. I use placement rather than heavy colour — a soft matte shade to define, a luminous lid to catch light, and liner and lashes flicked up and out to open the eye. Cream over powder, and set with a light hand

Powder is the other big ager of mature skin. Too much reads dry and settles into lines. My rule is cream for smoothness, a whisper of powder only where you need staying power — the T-zone, perhaps, not the whole face.
