How to stop makeup settling into fine lines
If your makeup looks lovely at 9am and has crept into every fine line by lunchtime, it’s rarely your skin’s fault — it’s prep, product and how the makeup is set. The fix is a hydrated base, thinner layers, and setting only where you actually need it. Here’s the exact approach I use so makeup stays smooth and fresh all day on mature skin.
Why makeup settles in the first place
Fine lines catch makeup for two reasons: dry skin and too much product. When skin is under-hydrated it draws foundation in, and the excess has nowhere to go but into the creases. Pile powder on top and you set it there for the day. So the goal isn’t a special anti-line product — it’s giving the makeup less to pool with, on skin that’s smooth to start with.
Prep: hydrate, then grip
Everything starts with hydration. I smooth and hydrate thoroughly, let it absorb, then use a light smoothing primer only where lines sit — around the eyes, mouth and forehead. Less product, placed with intent
The heavier the coverage, the more there is to crease. I use a thin layer of a lightweight, skin-like foundation and build only where it’s needed, rather than a full matte mask across the whole face — the same restraint I bring to all my mature-skin makeup. Under the eyes especially, the smallest amount of a hydrating concealer, tapped in gently, beats a thick layer every time. Set only where you need it
This is the step most people overdo. Powder is what locks makeup into lines, so I set with a light hand — a small amount of finely-milled powder pressed into just the areas that move or get shiny, usually the T-zone, and nothing on the rest of the face. Everywhere else keeps a natural, luminous finish.
